2026 ISPE 年会暨展览会:区域与全球势能的交汇
The 2026 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo: A Convergence of Regional and Global Momentum
2026 ISPE 年会暨展览会将于10月18日(周日)起在生物健康之都区域(BHCR)举行,会议聚焦可持续制药运营、制造网络、供应链韧性、设施、数字化转型、数据完整性、人才培养与法规准备等议题。
But the Chapter isn’t simply sharing the same geographic location as the event—the region is living through many of the same manufacturing, workforce, digital, and reliability challenges that the 2026 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo is bringing industry together to address.
BioHealth Capital Region Enters a New Era
What’s in a name? For many, regional identity is tied to a name. BioHealth Capital Region (BHCR), DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia), Chesapeake Bay Area—these are all regional names associated with the #3 Biopharma Cluster in the US.
The BHCR is distinct in that the region is situated in the home of the federal government—the US Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health, and other agencies are headquartered here. Pair that with the outstanding universities (Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland system, George Mason University to name a few) along with a plethora of lab space, and the region has the framework for a great incubator system.
However, this hasn’t always translated to manufacturing growth—until now. One of the most significant developments in the region is the renewed drive to build manufacturing capacity. Consider:
- AstraZeneca’s announced US$2 billion investment in Maryland, as well as its US$4.5 billion greenfield facility in Virginia
- Samsung Biologics’ acquisition of and investment in the former GSK facility in Rockville, Maryland, representing their first US biologics facility
- Eli Lilly and Company’s planned US$5 billion investment in a new manufacturing facility near Richmond, Virginia
These projects will bring jobs and strengthen the BHCR’s role in producing medicines for cancer, rare diseases, and other conditions.
The Support Ecosystem
As the BHCR enters a new manufacturing phase, creating a need for talent, technology, and technical expertise, the ISPE Chesapeake Bay Area Chapter (CBA) provides the regional glue to build that ecosystem. The Chapter brings together diverse membership across industry, service providers, government, and academia to deliver technical programming, networking, and training opportunities for our community.
A thriving life sciences cluster requires more than laboratories and capital investment. It needs engineers who can design and commission complex facilities, scientists who understand GMP manufacturing, professionals who can navigate validation and regulatory requirements, and a workforce capable of adopting new technologies as quickly as the industry evolves. The CBA Chapter provides the forum for professionals to connect, exchange practical knowledge, and develop the skills needed to sustain the BHCR for the next generation.
A Natural Connection to the 2026 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo
So what does any of this have to do with the 2026 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo? The conference program focuses heavily on issues that are playing out across the BHCR today: sustainable pharmaceutical operations, manufacturing networks, supply chain resilience, facilities, digital transformation, data integrity, workforce development, regulatory readiness, and the transition from breakthrough science to reliable production.
In other words, the conversations happening at the conference directly connect to the work already underway across the region and the industry. The timing could hardly be better.
For life sciences professionals, this makes the 2026 Annual Meeting & Expo more than a conference—it is an opportunity to see firsthand how the ideas being discussed across the industry are being translated into facilities, technologies, and manufacturing capabilities in the BHCR.
The ISPE CBA Chapter is excited to showcase what its region is all about and is diving right into the local connections starting on conference Sunday, 18 October. The Chapter looks forward to welcoming everyone to Sunday Social, whether arriving after a long day of travel or unwinding after the afternoon workshops.
The Sunday programming will conclude with the 2026 ISPE Facility of the Year Awards (FOYA) Banquet and Awards Celebration. The AstraZeneca Rockville Manufacturing Center which is locally based will be recognized as FOYA Category Winner in the Social Impact – Unmet Medical Needs category and is contending for top FOYA honors. Side note: a tour of this facility is scheduled for Thursday morning, 22 October.
The conference tracks begin on Monday, 19 October, and continue through Wednesday morning, 21 October, with over 95 scheduled sessions. If that is a bit overwhelming, visit the conference website for some curated agendas. Or just follow –the author: here is some of what he is looking forward to:
People Capability, and the Workforce of Delivery
The use of AI and digital tools is certainly at the forefront of our industry, and is redefining what is possible from drug discovery to commercialization. However, it's people who remain at the center of innovation, execution, and real results. The skill and judgment of the user cannot be replaced. For that reason, the author is highly interested in this track that explores workforce readiness, leadership development, talent retention, human-AI collaboration, and strategies for building the capabilities needed for the future of pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Digital, Data, and Decision Integrity
But AI adoption will only continue to accelerate, so we need to embrace it. This track will explore how organizations are harnessing AI, advanced analytics, digital transformation, and data governance to improve decision-making across the product lifecycle. The author is particularly interested in how we can utilize digital tools to achieve predictable outcomes while driving speed to market.
Systems That Deliver Reliably
Reliable systems are the foundation of consistent product quality, operational performance, and patient supply. As project teams are challenged to accelerate timelines, it’s important to maintain focus on the facilities, equipment, utilities, manufacturing systems, and operational practices that enable dependable performance. After all, what’s the point of going fast if the systems can’t be relied on to safely and efficiently get drugs to patients? In this track, discover new approaches to reliability, maintenance, facility performance, manufacturing excellence, and lifecycle management.
But Wait, There’s More
For the author, one of the greatest benefits of the 2026 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo is what happens outside of the programmed activities—those conversations that happen in the hallways and at the coffee stations. That is the value of in-person attendance, no?
Whether looking to exchange ideas, build new relationships, discover emerging technologies, or reconnect with local and global colleagues, you’ll have plenty of opportunity throughout the conference. The Expo Hall alone features over 350 exhibitors and 12 hours of networking. Oh, and there are two pickleball courts for a little friendly competition.
Join ISPE in Washington, D.C.
And now to tie everything together: the BioHealth Capital Region has spent years building an ecosystem where discovery, investment, manufacturing, academia, government, and entrepreneurship intersect. The region is entering another important phase—one increasingly defined by scaling innovation and building the systems needed to reliably deliver the future. That is precisely the conversation the 2026 ISPE Annual Meeting & Expo is designed to advance.
And the ISPE Chesapeake Bay Area Chapter is proud to be part of that ecosystem—and to welcome the global ISPE community to the region.
